How to get to the university?

Information about travelling to Düsseldorf can be found here.

From the main station the easiest way to get to the university is the underground train U79 to "Universität Ost/Botanischer Garten". From the city centre one can reach the university via the underground train U73.

One can also use the tram 704 to "Christophstraße/Uni Nord" (about 10 min walk from the institute).

The most convinient parking spot is located at the end of the "Christophstraße", next to the train stop "Universität Ost/Botanischer Garten".

Getting around town

Düsseldorf is a relatively small city and it is very easy to get around using public transport. The Rheinbahn/Verkehrsbund Rhein-Ruhr runs the buses, trams and metro. Some of the following is plagiarised from their information for refugees.

Planning your trip: Google maps is usually good enough, but is sometimes inaccurate. The Rheinbahn journey planner is useful. From experience, the Android app Offi provides accurate and up-to-date information.

Where to buy tickets: 1. from the bus driver; 2. at the ticket vending machine at the stop (sometimes it is possible to buy tickets in vehicles), but you might need the exact change and cards are rarely accepted, 3. from vending machines at train stations (these give change, but don't take credit cards), 4. at the Rheinbahn/Verkehrsbund Rhein-Ruhr customer centre (KundenCenter).

Which tickets to buy: Single tickets (EinzelTicket) in Zone A (which essentially covers all of Düsseldorf, (including the airport) are valid for 90 minutes and you can get on and off as often as you wish. However they are not valid for return trips. They cost 2.70EUR.
For numerous trips, we recommend using a 4-trip ticket (4erTicket), which costs 10.20EUR.
For short trips (≤ 3 stops), you can buy a single Kurzstrecke (Einzel K) for 1.60EUR or a multiple Kurzstrecke (4erTicket K) for 5.90EUR.

Important: The ticket must be validated before starting your trip by inserting it into the red validator, either on the vehicle or before going down/up to the platform. Without a valid ticket the trip is considered not paid for. In case of a ticket inspection (which occur frequently), you will have to pay a fine of at least 60.00EUR.
